We are here to create a large, active network of growers. To do that, communication with everyone is essential. We hope that we can answer some of your questions before hand, but if there is something that we missed, let us know at thelifecooperative@gmail.com
Here are some frequently asked questions:
- Are there membership fees?
- Will I have to buy vegetables I don't want?
- How do I order?
- When do I pay?
- When and Where do I pick up my order?
- Why Support Locally Grown?
- How can I sell through this market?
- What other perks are there?
And here are some answers:
Are there membership fees?
To help us provide farm tours, educational programs, and to help us with our overhead costs, we ask that you pay an annual fee of $18 per household for one calendar year. Based on the valuation of the market, the price of membership will go up. You are welcome to try us for two orders before officially becoming members.
Will I have to buy vegetables I don't want?
Unlike some co-ops, buying clubs, or CSAs where everyone gets the same box of stuff (and you don’t know what you’re getting until you get it), with Locally Grown you get to order what you want, in the quantities that you want, from the farms that you want. The weekly email lists the produce, milled products, fresh flowers, and artisan goods available that week, and you can browse the items on this website before you place your order.
How do I order?
Members may order from the list of growers’ advertised products from Saturday night until Wednesday night. Growers then have Thursday and Friday to put your order together. You will be notified of where and when you can pick up your order.
When do I pay?
We accept cash or checks when you pick up your order. Because we may have to adjust your total then (to account for unnanounced items you decide to purchase or items that were unexpectedly unavailable), we do not accept advance payment on the website.
When and Where do I pick up my order?
We are working hard to support the people who support us so with this, we are going to keep you on your toes! Yes, we have our favorite places like Tire City Potters and Book Tavern, but we are going to be going to other places based on what our members want and need. As we grow we are going to have permanent locations but we are never going to stop highlighting those who are doing great things around the CSRA.
When? We are working with our growers and with our members to make ordering and pickup as easy as possible. Deliveries can be expected upon scheduling. Pick-ups can be expected on Fridays and Saturdays at announced times.
Why Support Locally Grown?
Enhance your local economy: By purchasing produce and other items from local growers you are providing stability to your local economy through the support of local businesses.
Save natural resources: Buying locally makes you an invaluable link in the process of saving resources such as fossil fuels and packaging materials. Also, we are right here in your community so the expense of transportation and delivery is kept to a minimum.
Provide learning opportunities: Locally Grown supporters provide member growers the means to help educate our community about the importance of sustainable agriculture.
Supporting a way of life: The number of small farms in the United States has decreased dramatically in the last decade. Please help us preserve an honest and worthy means of making a living.
We believe that small, diverse, family-owned farms contribute to society’s overall health.
How can I sell through this market?
If you’ve already created a customer account here, simply go to Our Growers and click on ‘If you would like to sell through this market, pleas tell us about yourself and a market manager will contact you.’. This will add you to our system and our market managers will contact you with the next step. We do charge a one-time-only fee of $21 as well as .05% of your overall sales. Like at a traditional farmers’ market, you do get to set your own prices and list your items as you wish. Contact thelifecooperative if you want more information.
What other perks are there?
Along with getting great local food not to mention other things you may want or need and being able to participate in great events there are a number of benefits to joining the Co-op.
The Life Co-op also pays back yearly dividends on your investment in local growers based on how much you spend and how much you participate in the activities of the cooperative.
